About the Artist - Patience Brewster
The Joy of Looking article from and by
 Patience Brewster was an artist from the
moment she picked up a pencil. "At least, that’s what my mother
has always told me," she says with a laugh. "Of course, she had
six children and thought all of them were good at everything."
She drew constantly as a child, inspired by the animals and insects that roamed the fields and ponds of Plymouth, Massachusetts. Her family provided plenty of fuel for her hungry imagination: Her grandmother was an artist who illustrated a cookbook; her mother painted and made furniture and jewelry; her father designed the house she grew up in and enjoyed making whatever he needed out of found objects. Artistic success came early. "I was on the school bus in first grade, and a girl named Judy Smith asked me if she could take one of my paintings home," she says. "Even then, I loved knowing that my work gave pleasure to others." It still does. Today, Patience is renowned as the illustrator of beloved children’s books such as Bear and Roly-Poly and Too Many Puppies. Her images adorn greeting cards, ornaments, and gift items, and her original paintings and drawings are in demand at galleries. |

Patience considered other careers – veterinarian, writer—her
heart led her to Philadelphia College of Art. Her degree, in
printmaking and bookmaking, "qualified me for immediate
employment as a cook, teddy bear salesperson, and barmaid," she
notes ruefully. But she kept painting.
Cheering her on was husband Holland Gregg, whom she married in 1977. "He convinced me to come out of the woods and take my portfolio to New York." After months of shopping her drawings around, she landed a contract to illustrate a children’s book. "I was 25 and in shock, followed by joy, then terror." "Some small commercial success was wonderful at first, but it led to a certain loss of creative control," Patience admits. "I had too much work, living from one deadline to the next, trying to please everyone but myself. I’d forgotten my reason for becoming an artist." |

Despite her disciplined work ethic, Patience, like all creative souls, occasionally experienced artist’s block until an artist friend, Margot Datz, gave her a permanent cure. "She told me to think of someone I love, hold that person in my mind’s eye, and start drawing," Patience says. "It worked. The art came out beautifully, like a gift for both of us."

The
solution? More work, "but work of my own choosing. I needed to
remember what it felt like to draw simply for the joy of it. It
was the best thing I ever did. It restored my soul and improved
my art." Now she makes time for purely creative projects,
working with oil sticks and paint, collage, and gold leaf. She’s
shared several exhibits with her sister, artist Marlee Brewster
Brockmann. The Greggs have two children, Holland, age 25, and
Marietta, 23. "They’re my favorite people," Patience says, her
pride evident. Holland Jr., who has an engineering degree, works
for the family business. "He’s battling Hodgkins’ disease but
stays brave, positive, and strong." Marietta has a degree in
international affairs. "We’ll put it to use if and when we make
any products outside the U.S..
